I think Centerville certainly has a chance against the Cincinnati teams. Lebanon is a good team, but hasn't really been tested. I think both of their games against ranked teams (I don't count Springboro after having seen them play) ended up in ties (Beavercreek and Wayne). Wayne finally got a win over a ranked team last night (defeated Butler, 2-1) but I think they give up too many goals against good teams to make a deep run.

Beavercreek is interesting. They don't give up many goals and have had a pretty good run after a shaky start (and have a win over Lakota West already). Troy has a pretty strong team, and has played a pretty solid schedule. They have a big-time scorer, and have moved a girl to the back who can be a big-time defender. The did lose some speed in the middle of the field (when they moved the girl to the back). Goalkeeping may be their achilles heel.

Bottom line though is probably Dayton will be lucky to advance one team out of District play.

Regular season winding down and looking toward the district tournament it might not look good for the Dayton teams.

If memory serve last year there were 3 “district” brackets for Dayton teams, … ONLY Dayton teams in one and Dayton v Cincinnati in the other 2 … Centerville beat Wayne 2-1, Lebanon lost to Loveland 1-0, Bellbrook lost to Ursuline 6-2 There was also a Cincinnati only, St. Ursula beat Mason.

This year it looks like 4 SW Ohio District brackets Cinn 1 & 2, Dayton 1 & 2 … ALL 4 finals are a Dayton team v a Cincinnati team! Good news there will be 4 Dayton teams in the District finals. Bad news is Dayton teams have not faired well in the recent past v Cincinnati teams.

Centerville could be competitive if the cards fall the right way & their coach can keep them away from St. Ursula and Ursaline.

Is their any one from the top schools in the Dayton area, Centerville, Beavercreek, Lebanon (I still think of them as a Cincinnati team), Wayne, Troy … that thinks they match up well with the top schools in Cincinnati? (St. Ursula, Ursaline, Sycamore, Mason, Mount Notre Dame, Lakota West ….)

I wonder if next year there will be 4 “open” districts in SW Ohio?

Well, I won't try to hide my bias - I'm a Beavercreek parent.

I'll completely agree with your comments in the first half. I thought Centerville dominated the first half, with possession and had more opportunities, although Creek had a open goal from no more than two or three yards away and hit it wide. Centerville had their chances, too. I think Creek gave Centerville too much respect, as many of the defenders were five yards off their marks most of the half.

My personal feeling is that the second half was pretty even. I didn't see the possession domination from Centerville that they had in the first half. Opportunities were pretty even, too (IIRC). Centerville may have forced Creek to make better keeper saves, but Centerville has been dominant in the goal for years, it's nice to see someone else be very solid back there.

Own goal, yes, but I believe the shot was going in if Centerville didn't hit it.

Five yellow cards for Centerville, too. Should have had a sixth and a PK for Creek at the end, when the keeper jumped up and pushed our striker after a scrum on the ground for the ball (which the keeper never gained possession of).

Then again, Centerville had a great break-away 1 on 1 opportunity in the last couple of minutes, but Creek's keeper came up huge.

That said, I do prefer the prettier style of play, and Centerville was clearly much better at the possession game, and clearly deserve to be the top-ranked team in the Miami Valley. I was quite surprised Beavercreek jumped all the way to number 2.

The topic of my original post was probably from excitement. :-) My expectations of Beavercreek were not real high this season. With Wayne inexplicably not playing up to expectations, I was afraid the Elks may not even be challenged until the playoffs.

honestly i am not one to say the point of soccer is to possess the ball and play "pretty", but it is to put the ball in the goal and win. but with this game anyone who watched it could tell centerville was the better team, keeping the ball in creek's 18 the whole first half and most of the second. creek got lucky with an own goal late in the second half and its agreeable that centerville should have scored more but i dont think that score says much of anything from this game.

From the southern Dayton area:

Springboro having a terrible season. Looks like they must have lost a major portion of last years starters. Middletown is not able to get anything clicking. Carlisle is not showing up for their games. Madison winning but not against anyone great. Franklin still can't get past their poor coaches despite the addition of a very talented freshman to the forward position. Trenton (Edgewood) may be on a streak after a couple early losses. Fenwick with a good record but two losses to teams they should be beating. Probably not a repeat of last year.

Those are the teams I've been able to catch a game.

I know that there is grumbling among hs Football coaches because they would like something similar, as they are tired of such as the GWOC having so few teams in it. They, too, would like to have divisions although I haven't seen any mention of promotion/relegation. As far as I know, the Football commissioner is not interested, stating (incredibly, I think) that both parents and communities are happy with the set-up as is and, therefore, there will be no changes for the forseeable future. Wow! How depressing!

Even though the previous information is about Football as opposed to real football (Soccer!), the general problem is the same: administrators either don't care or don't have a clue about the sports they administrate. If they did, and if they were true fans, why would they stick their heads in the sand? I suppose the answer is that doing so makes their adninistrative life easier.

I would venture to say all true fans - whether of hs soccer or football or both - would be much happier seeing, say, three 10-team divisions (A, B and C). That's not to say the prposed new set-up would be perfect. We all know there's no such thing! However, we should at least aim to make things better, shouldn't we? After all these years of local hs soccer and football, we STILL have pointless match-ups either because there is a mismatch in quality, or because the game is a non-conference one. If teams are going to play non-conference, wouldn't it better for such games to number about six or so a season against teams from outside the local area? At least let there be as many as nine meaningful, appropriate division games against local teams (if not more!).

Finally, I am 99% sure (like you, no doubt) that even if a petition were started and a bucketload of signatures gathered and delivered to the main soccer administrator, he'd probably toss it in the trash, However, if we could get ADs and head coaches to sign on, then maybe we'd get somewhere somehow. I suppose coaches who might not sign on would be those fearful they'd end up in Division B or C, believing their teams should be in the higher division. Still, I can't help wondering! Should we try by getting a petition started at the end of this season?

From what i've seen the ref's dn't protect anyone. I have seen some of the worst officiating this season then ever before. I've seen more injuries this year because ref's pick and choose what to call and the game gets out of control. There job is not only to officiate but also control the game they are not doing a very good job of it this year. Who pays? The players.

Socdad,

Sadly, I think you're quite right. To restructure as I suggest would amount to a mini-revolution and I seriously doubt any AD would even want to contemplate it. That being said, I still believe in the 'rightness' of my idea and, at least, would like to see it given a 5-year try. Wouldn't you?
