Could not agree with you more. Some other area programs seem to worry about what they don't have or didn't get in regards to players. Other programs don't play to their kid's or team's strengths, They just try to run the same tired & predictable sets that reveal the coaches limitations rather than capitalize on the potential they may have. In some cases, the key word being some, the kids are playing so much basketball in the spring & summer and getting so much experience that come fall they may be alot farther along then the coaches give them credit for or want to. Staley has alays been able to capitalize on his player's abilities and it shows.

Jim Staley from Centerville has figured it out! Most teams think that recruiting the best kids from the area and attempting to put together the best team around is the way to go. Staley has gone another route, by working with the talent given to him, Staley and his up and rising 2008-2009 team have gone 34-0 this off season. Beating such teams as state champs Newark, and the team that knocked them out last year ,Princeton (twice.)
Lead by a frontline of seniors, the elks have 8 returning letterman, who can all be traced back to the elks camps which start as young as 2nd grade. Playing together since 2nd and 3rd grade gives them a huge advantage when they are faced against a team that is more athletic or stronger, which doesn't happen very often.

Laughman has been asked to step down as the Jets Varsity coach. This makes rooms for Tim Barga to step in who has done a good job with the Varsity girls team the last two years. However, many attribute that good job to having one of the best players in the area. Things will be different on the mens side with there being a lack of size and talent, but hopefully Barga will be able to get the best out of what he has.

On a disappointing note, word has it that Barga has informed the board that he will only take the varsity job if Laughman is the JV coach. Apparently, Barga feels bad that he is taking Laughmans job and wants to keep him on board.First of all, how bad does this make Laughman look if he takes the JV job after getting voted 5-0 from the BOE to be removed. Secondly, what is Barga thinking. The kids did not respect him on the Varsity level so why does Barga think he will do a better job with the reserves? Laughman had his chance and did not come through. He needs to move on and let "fresh" coaching talent come in.

There have been rumors of a former SCL standout in the county wanting to coach at Fairlawn. Hopefully, "small town politics" do not get in the way of them making the right choice rather than the ill-logical choice!

I think they were cheap fouls personally, but regardless Graham still took care of business. I think Canal Winchester got out coached. BJ scored almost everytime he got the ball in the paint. I think that Canal Winchester could have ran a high low or ran a flex to get him the ball. Even if Graham got weak side help it would have been too late though. I think Canal took some early shots, and didn't allow BJ to get down the court and score. But you got to give Graham credit they hit big shots.

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was coaching 3rd grade boys basketball at a Dayton Recreational Center in the late 80’s. For this article, let’s use the name “Kenny” to describe my best player. For 4 weeks of practice, I waited for him to bring me his “parent” signed Permission / Waiver form. Our 1st game of the season arrived and I had a choice to make. Do I play him or not. I chose not to play him. Our team got beat by the Dayton Mohawks something like 80-20. Once I received “Kenny’s” signed permission slip, he averaged about 30 points per game. At least looking back now, it seemed like 30.
Because of my decision not to play “Kenny” that day, my heart has felt good and I have enjoyed coaching youth recreational basketball for 20 plus years. I don’t brag when I tell you that “I have never been investigated by the YMCA athletic directors for using an ineligible kid, or a kid from another YMCA.” I don’t think they would do that anyway to a volunteer coach.

Now comes Jefferson High School and Coach Art Winston. It’s so sad for every single player on that team, including the ineligible player in question. My heart goes out to such young kids who are simply playing a game they love, possibly trying to get a free ride to any college, and learning to make the right decisions in life.

What a shame Coach Art Winston.

If you have a player that you know you are waiting confirmation that he is eligible, you don’t play him. If you need the player, you pick up the phone, again, and again, and again, until you get a letter. I don’t care how good the kid is or if his name is “Kenny”, the kid does not play. The kid was home schooled. You know there are regulations you must follow. Now because of “winning at all costs,” you have a heart broken team.

I seen this Jefferson team play numerous times this year, and I can tell you this; they still would have gotten this far in the tournament had any single player from this team not played. This team is loaded with talent.

Winning at all cost? Is it worth it?

Let’s just sit back and see, who and how, the Jefferson High School Board ensures that someone pay for the heartbreak and hard work these kids put in. Indiana fired Kelvin Sampson for 3-way calls, and oh yeah, lying! Let’s see if JHS steps up, shows these kids they matter, and provide each parent of every player a feeling of knowing they made the right decision to have their player play at Jefferson High School.

Mailman2, I could not agree more. Who chooses these players? I just noticed that William McGuire from Dayton Stivers was selected 3rd-team. WOW. This kid averaged almost 18 points per game, and probaly at least 10 assist per game (if his coaches submitted them after each game) on a DIII school, who played mostly DII and DI schools this season. I saw this kid play about 8 times this year and he can hang with 90% of the players on the 1st team. I enjoyed watching Harney play but he is a perfect example of many players on the DIII list. Players who played weak schedules and coaches (this is good for them) who marketed their players name. Take a count at the end of the weekend and see how many of these players are still in the tournament. I watched Madison & Harney go down this week and Harney had 0 points near the end of the 3rd quarter. Harney is a great player, but come on DDN. A high percentage of players picked take all the shots, some their fathers are coaches on the team, and some have coaches who do what they are supposed to do, market their players. Show some love to other schools and not the same schools year-in and year-out. Hats off to Staten, what a player. He deserves his honors.

DIII All-Southwest District Team

Okay, who votes on these players? Now, I have nothing against Harney (Madison) and Summers (TVS) but how do they make 1st team All District over Jared Moore from Dixie? Madison finished 3rd in the SWBL Buckeye Division. Moore led Dixie to league title and only one point difference in averages. Summers is a good shooter...period. Moore averaged the same and is a much more complete player. He plays point, forward, or even post and is the best ballhandler in both divisions by far. Furthermore, how does a kid make player of the year in his league and yet someone else in his division (Harney) is put ahead of him! What a crock!

In all these posts I hear accusations and rumors as to why WC can't get in a league. As a fan, I want to know who is looking out for the kids best interest. Sure, the really good athletes can play at the college level without a league. But hearing from families who have past experience being in a league compared to not being in a league, it helps a lot. Someone needs to be looking out for the best interest of all the student/athletes, no matter where they go to high school.
The leagues should be configured to include and serve all high schools that want to be in a league. Those who are in charge of forming the leagues should be in charge for the right reasons, not just to further their own cause. Someone needs to get with it and do the right thing.

No, it's not totally due to the size of West Carrollton or the reputation that Tipp City has in sports, but the lack of success other schools will now have with better competition in the league. I officiated sports for a long, long time, and things have changed so drastically. It used to be that schools played other schools and it didn't matter the size or their records. Big schools were in leagues with small schools and many of the smaller schools could hold their own. I know that today, things have changed. There aren't many small schools out there that could compete with the big boys anymore, but there are the usual schools that aren't as good in certain sports than others, and they get beat like a drum each and every year. Some schools schedule these lambs headed for the slaughter to build up their records. It looks good to the schools. I always admired Fenwick when they were in Class A and got their tails beaten by the big boys in their league, but would then go on compete and even win the state in the football playoffs. They didn't duck the big schools, but knew that it would make their team better in the end when the playoffs came. If you look closely, you don't see many players upset and crying when they lose a league championship, but boy do the tears flow when the season comes to an end in the playoffs or tournament trail when these young athletes realize they've possibly played their last high school game. Just my opinion.

I don’t disagree with your numbers EXCEPT that WC’s enrollment is declining not stable. I think I heard this is the first year in a long time that there wasn’t at least 1000+ at the high school. Enrollment numbers aside consider this: WC had 35-40 players (maybe) between the reserve and varsity football teams. The Varsity record this year was 1-9 and last year 0-10. WC has had ONE winning season in the last 15-20 years (could be longer). A few years ago, WC played Valley View and got crushed. I think VV was a D-IV team then and WC D-II. For several years WC has scrimmaged Milton-Union and MU has beaten WC in most of them.
In Boys basketball WC has been among the areas top teams at times. This year WC beat VV and SWBL Champ Bellbrook but lost to Oakwood in 3-OT’s (great game). BUT after next season WC doesn’t have many good players coming up. I’m not even going to get started on the girls’ basketball team but they haven’t had a winning season in years.
2 points that I’m trying to make is this: 1. Even though WC is larger than all of the teams in the SWBL they wouldn’t come in and dominate the league. 2. The biggest advantage of having WC in the SWBL is the revenue it will bring to the other schools at the gates. WC supports most of its athletics very well, win or lose. Oakwood and Valley View benefited ($$$) from playing WC this year.
